Why walk after eating?
Moving your muscles after a meal helps blunt the rise in blood sugar that follows it.
In a 2016 study, 41 adults with type 2 diabetes tried two walking plans with the same total time. One was a 30 minute walk at any time of day. The other was a 10 minute walk after each main meal.
Walking after meals lowered blood sugar after meals by 12% on average compared with walking at any time. [1, 2]
To be straight about the limits: the clearest effect is on the rise after each meal. A 2024 real world study found post meal exercise improved blood sugar after meals but not 24 hour blood sugar control overall. [7] WalkTen is built around exactly that: the walk after each meal.
How long should I walk after eating?
10 minutes, started right after the meal. Even 2 to 5 minutes beats sitting.
The 2016 study used a 10 minute walk after each meal. [1] In a 2025 study, a 10 minute walk right after eating lowered blood sugar over the next two hours about as much as a 30 minute walk started later, and people rated it much easier. [6] A 2022 review of seven studies found that short, light walks of 2 to 5 minutes lowered blood sugar more than sitting, and more than standing. [3]
WalkTen uses a 10 minute walk after meals and a 5 minute walk after snacks.
How soon after eating should I walk?
Right away. The newest research says sooner beats later.
A 2023 review of controlled trials found walking works better when it starts as soon as possible after a meal, rather than after a longer wait or before eating. The shorter the gap, the bigger the effect. [5]
A 2025 study showed why. A 10 minute walk started immediately after eating lowered the blood sugar peak. A longer 30 minute walk started 30 minutes later did not, because the spike had already happened. Blood sugar typically peaks 30 to 60 minutes after eating. [6]
That's why WalkTen nudges you right after you eat, not later.
Which meal is the most important to walk after?
Dinner.
In the 2016 study, most of the benefit came from walking after dinner: a 22% reduction in blood sugar after the meal. The researchers pointed out that dinners were the most carbohydrate heavy meal and were followed by the most sitting. [2]
If you only build one walk into your day, make it the one after dinner.
How fast should I walk after a meal?
Easy. A pace where you can still hold a conversation.
The research used light walking, not brisk exercise. [3] You don't need to break a sweat or change clothes. Walk at whatever pace feels comfortable after a meal.
Does walking indoors after eating count?
Yes. The research is about light walking, not where you do it.
Hallways, stairs, store aisles, and walking in place all count. If walking isn't possible, marching your feet while seated keeps you moving. Ask your doctor what fits you.
Should I walk after snacks too?
Most research looks at meals, not snacks. A short walk after a snack is our rule, not a study's.
WalkTen asks for a 5 minute walk after a snack, based on research showing short, light walks help compared with sitting. [3] Plenty of people also find that knowing a walk comes next makes them think twice about the snack.
Is a fart walk the same as walking after eating?
Yes. It's a nickname for the same habit.
The fart walk is an easy walk after dinner. WalkTen is the plain version of the same idea: a walk after every meal.
Is walking after eating safe?
For most people, an easy walk is about as gentle as exercise gets. Check with your doctor if you have a heart condition or diabetes.
Worried about your stomach? In the 2025 study, walking immediately after eating caused almost no stomach discomfort. [6]
One diabetes specialist has cautioned that people with heart disease should be careful about exercising right after meals, since digestion also places demands on the heart. [4] If you have a heart condition, diabetes, or take medication that lowers blood sugar, talk to your doctor before starting.
Is there an app for walking after eating?
Eat. Walk.
Yes. WalkTen is an iPhone app that reminds you to take a 10 minute walk after eating. The practice is free for anyone: a walk after every meal. The app just helps you keep it.
Try it free for 7 days. After that it is $29.99 a year, or $49.99 once.
